Biography

After graduating from the Secondary Industrial School of Chemistry in Brno (1987), Pavel Karásek continued studies in physical and analytical chemistry at the University of Chemical Technology in Pardubice (1992). In the same year he joined the Institute of Analytical Chemistry of the Czech Academy of Sciences, and in 2002 he successfully completed his Ph.D. studies and obtained a Ph.D. degree in analytical chemistry. At the beginning of his career, Pavel was mainly engaged in the study of extraction of solid and liquid samples by supercritical fluids, research of new techniques for the trapping of analytes after extraction and measurement of physicochemical data (partition coefficients in the CO2-analyte-water system). In addition to methodology development, he has also been actively involved in the design of laboratory instruments operating at high temperatures and pressures. Several instruments have been developed, e.g., LIZARD2000, OnePSE, FastPSE and a unique laboratory apparatus for direct SFE extraction of liquid samples. In the last 10 years, his research and design activities have been mainly focused on the field of "supercritical water" and its application in analytical or materials science. The results of his scientific work are regularly published in foreign impacted journals (66 times) and in the form of conference presentations. Since 1993 he has been a member of research teams of many grant projects (24 times), in 1995-1997 he was a member of the team of the international Copernicus project. Pavel was a member of the Scientific Council of the institute in 2004-2006, vice-chairman of the Supervisory Board of the institute (2012-2022), he worked as a reviewer for the Grant Agency of the Czech Republic, a member of the dissertation defense committee and currently he is a reviewer for scientific journals, e.g., J. Sep. Sci., J. Chromatogr. A. etc. He has been a member of the Institute Council since 2022.
