Richard Čmelík completed his doctoral thesis in organic chemistry at
Masaryk University in 2005. The topic of the dissertation was the
synthesis of sulfur-containing heterocycles.
During his
studies, he joined the Institute of Analytical Chemistry of the CAS
and started to apply advanced spectrometric and spectroscopic methods
to the structure elucidation of organic compounds. He has focused on
the analysis of carbohydrates, peptides and their bioconjugates of
plant origin by means of liquid chromatography and/or mass
spectrometry. It usually includes derivatization and purification of
the target compounds.
Moreover, he turned his attention to
reverse task: how to change structure of molecule to improve or
facilitate subsequent analysis. This let him to synthesize labels
suitable for glycomic analysis and markers of isoelectric point.
